Our Big Red Bash Trip to Birdsville

First stop Wongarbon…

We have just returned from our trip in our ‘Lucky Country’ square-drop camper to Birdsville to the Big Red Bash. Wow what a trip it was! I can honestly say that this was up there with one of the best holiday’s we have ever had. Australia really is the lucky country when it comes to incredible landscapes filled with so many different colours. The desert totally blew us away with it’s unforgiving dirt tracks, the red dust which is everywhere, the animals just wandering around the road and the incredible sunrises and sunsets.

Our first stop to camp was in Wongarbon at a great place called Billy’o Bush Retreat in NSW. It’s close in proximity to Dubbo which means you can visit the zoo and the old jaol while you’re in town.

The owner Mark and his son Noah were were fantastic and nothing was too much trouble. The property is very picturesque with really nice views for miles. Sunsets and sunrises are pretty spectacular too which is nice once happy hour starts. There is a bar and lots of interesting old vintage items out on display all around the property. A lot of thought and creativity has gone into the design and feel of this place.

This is the perfect place for a wedding or a work event too. If you are ever in the area of Dubbo but want to stay a bit out of town, then this is your place.

Getting ready for the Big Red Bash…

Not long now and our family will be heading off on an adventure to the Big Red Bash in Birdsville. A concert filled with Australian music in the Simpson Desert with over 9000 other campers.

The preparation has been huge as we had expected. Pete has built a new off road squaredrop camper that will hopefully be tough enough to handle the rough terrain to Birdsville and back. He has done an amazing job. It’s a very bright green and has all cushy comforts that we love about our Happy Hour teardrop but, this one is just more gutsy and will be better equipped for our outback journey. As we have 3 children, they will be snuggling up together in the second story of the build in a rooftop tent. I of course had to add a touch of girly glam and included some pink in the bedding and the back wall inside is fuschia pink.

Introducing ‘Lucky Country’.

The headlining band at the Bash is Pete’s all time favourite, Midnight Oil amongst so many other great bands and artists. A song he loves from the band is ‘Lucky Country’ which was the inspiration behind the name of our camper.

The journey to the Bash will be amazing in itself. I’m expecting beautiful outback landscapes, plenty of red desert dirt and what I’m looking forward to the most is the desert sunrises and sunsets. I’ll be ready to capture this on my camera and in my memory forever.

We’ve always loved a road trip and this will be the longest we have done but we will be stopping along the way taking in the sites. We’ll be visiting farmstays, cattle stations, and some cool country pubs along the way.

Imagine a whole bunch of like minded camping lovers all rugged up in the Aussie Winter sunshine in the middle of the Simpson desert singing along together. We can’t wait! It’s not everyone’s cup of tea but for us, this is going to be epic.
